GREEN SISTERS is a women’s environmental group whose aim is to raise awareness about environmental issues and encourage people to act on a local level. The group was formed in 2006 and is based in Athens, Greece.
OUR AIM
Every choice that each one of us makes has a positive or negative impact on the environment. Our aim is to try to maximise the positive impact of our lifestyle while minimising the negative effects.
HOW?
• By gathering and sharing practical information about how we can reduce our negative impact on the environment through practical every day actions. We have looked into composting in our homes, buying organic food, recycling, easy ways of reducing our consumption of energy and water, using our cars less, and many more ideas.
• By educating children and their parents in a creative way through art, theatre, and stories, about the fragility of the environment and ways to protect the eco-system. We have recently initiated a pilot programme about environmental awareness for children ιn one primary school in Kifissia.
• By inviting specialists and organizing discussions, which are open to the public,
about a variety of environmental issues.
• By helping our local council to improve the efficiency of its recycling programme and by providing additional information to the public about the benefits of recycling.
• By collaborating with our local municipality to start a composting programme for schools and households.
• By assisting local shops and businesses to find ways of becoming more eco-friendly.
• At the same time we would like to help consumers understand the impact
of their everyday choices on the environment.
We are currently collaborating with the municipality of Kifissia on the ECO WEEK 2007 festival by planning local events for adults and children.
ECO WEEK 2007 www.ecoweek.gr
Good on you for starting this new organization. This past week I was fortunate to hear Paul Hawken speak in Colorado. Mr. Hawken is a true eco-warrior and entrepeneur, having written the seminal book “The Ecology of Commerce” as well as co-authoring “Natural Capitalism”, amongst 4 other books and countless articles. His new book “Blessed Unrest” speaks to how environmental issues and social justice issues are indelibly linked (and is named thusly based on the blessed unrest often felt by artistic folks). Likewise he notes that it is important for us to act locally, to not worry about 10 or 50 years into the future (this may cause unneccesary anguish!), and realize when you look into the mirror that YOU are the hero: do not wait on some charismatic, white male leader who will take us to the green promised land. Each of us has the power to make change happen. So to the ladies of Green Sisters I wish you great successes and small ones; always keep your heads up and know that you are doing important work. And in order for the 100’s of thousands of similar organisations worldwide to share their experiences/background/goals Mr Hawken has established a collaborative website, http://www.wiserearth.org . I recommend that you list your organisation there. Best of luck and thank you from this citizen of the world.
Excellent initiative, I lack the time to help physically, but will avertise your actions virtually!
Do you have a contact to get some of the posters from HELMEPA?

I read of your support for HELMEPA in distributing their posters of the dangers of throwing rubbish in the sea and I am interested in where I can get some of these posters. The article used your website as a source, but I couldn’t find any mention of the poster on it.
Many thanks for your wonderful work.

I am looking for the posters too. They should be put all over Greece to wake up everyone here. Where are they? I live on Crete.
